Applying for Veteran Administration (VA) Benefits
To Apply for Benefits:
Apply online at gibill.va.gov and click on "Apply for GI Bill Benefits."
Follow the instructions on the web page for further guidance. Choose from the following forms:
22-1990 if you have served in the military and are applying for education benefits for the first time.
22-1995 veterans changing schools
22-5490 if you are a dependent of a deceased or 100% disabled Veteran (spouse or child) applying for education benefits for
the first time.
22-5495 dependents changing schools
New POST 9-11 GI Bill
The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition based upon the highest in-state tuition charged by an educational institution in the state. See gibill.va.gov/Training/Pamphlets.htm for more information.
Transfer of Post 9-11 GI Bill Benefits to Dependents
For the first time in history, service members enrolled in the Post-9/11 GI Bill program will be able to transfer unused educational benefits to their spouses or children. For more information, please visit: gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/CH33/Transfer.htm
