Community Partner Profiles

Daniels College of Business has recently partnered with a small number of organizations through which our students can give back to the community. These community partnerships allow business students to use their business skills to help others.

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement’s mission is to ensure that every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system.

Junior Achievement is the successful bridge between education and business, reaching approximately 6 million students worldwide. JA’s unique approach integrates program materials, training and support – all provided to schools at no cost. In order to provide our proven programs to the thousands of teachers who request it every year, we rely primarily on the business community for funding and volunteer support.

Junior Achievement volunteers teach fun, interactive lessons about business to kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, helping students understand how important a complete education is to future success. They embody the heart of Junior Achievement. Taking a message of opportunity and economic understanding to a classroom in your community, no matter what your profession, is JA in action. We have openings for classroom volunteers throughout the year.

Young Americans Center for Financial Education

The mission of Young Americans is to further the economic education of young people so they will be competent and knowledgeable in managing their financial affairs and may prosper in the free enterprise system. Volunteers may participate in the International Towne program. This hands-on program helps young "world citizens" become better prepared for the financial realities of the global marketplace. Designed to teach an array of international economic concepts, International Towne focuses on "5 C's":

  • Currency Exchange
  • Citizenship
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Global Cooperation through Competition
  • Career Exploration
Students prepare by first participating in 29 highly interactive lessons taught in their classrooms by teachers and Resource Partners from the community. During that time, students engage in lessons and activities that not only assist them in learning basic global economics, but also reinforce cultural awareness, geography, math, science, and civics. The culminating experience of this program is a day-long trip to the International Towne facility in Denver where students-turned-citizens run a world of 16 foreign countries.

Microbusiness Development

Micro Business Development is a Colorado non-profit organization whose mission is to stimulate and support micro enterprise by creating economic opportunity and business growth through access to knowledge, resources and business capital to underserved populations. Volunteers may participate in the following programs:

YouthWorks offers Denver’s urban youth an opportunity to improve their lives, and their communities, through entrepreneurial initiatives. YouthWorks supports all youth interested in exploring their entrepreneurial potential by providing progressive entrepreneurial education from basic skill development to actual hands-on experience. MBD’s MicroBusiness Assessment (MBA) is an innovative program that gives small business owners an affordable, analytic review of their business enterprise and provides them with the tools and recommendations necessary to achieve their goals.

The ABCs of MBD is a three-session business course for entrepreneurs that establish the fundamentals of running a small business. Following completion of the course, participants will have a template that can be used to develop a polished business plan. The class is a required component of the $500 peer lending loan program and for anyone who does not have a formal business plan.

Seniors Inc.

Serving Colorado residents since 1969, we are dedicated to promoting independence and enhancing the quality of life as we age.

Our services are diverse, yet the common threads running through all our services include promoting independence, offering support and caring, and encouraging growth.

Seniors Inc. is currently looking for volunteers to be part of their Service Corps of Professionals. We are looking for volunteers who possess certain advisory skills such as legal assistance, real estate, estate planning, financial planning, budgeting, etc., as well as volunteers who want to learn something new and informational (i.e., Medicare's new Prescription Drug Benefit, Social Security, etc.). Some volunteers will be onsite to gather client information and answer simple questions. Others (who possess the professional advisory skills) will have the option of being onsite or part of our Virtual Volunteer Network. Our Virtual Volunteer Network will allow the transfer of "cases" to volunteers online and the volunteer can respond to the client in his/her own time frame via phone or email. It also allows for several volunteers to "consult" with regard to more multidimensional cases. We believe this offers our volunteers a more flexible schedule and pattern of operation than traditional volunteer programs. While we are focusing on the retiree population for volunteers, we would never turn away volunteers of any age!

Mile High United Way

Mile High United Way partners with non profits, for profits, government agencies, and individuals to build a better community for metro Denver. At one time or another, people need help caring for a family member, finding a safe place for children or learning new skills. We are the leading resource for convening partnerships and collaborations. We unite community, agencies and donors in shaping a community agenda that identifies the health and human service problems of our community and finds the best way to solve them. We organize our work in the 5 priority areas described below.

  • School Readiness
  • Youth Success
  • Reduce Family, School and Community Violence
  • Tools For Success
  • Emergency Assistance

Volunteers may help small community based organizations with marketing and communication and or a variety of business related needs. In addition, volunteers may work with resource partners as a youth mentor.

The Delores Project

The Delores Project is an overnight shelter housing adult women who might otherwise have to sleep on the street or in other circumstances which put them at great risk.

Women seeking shelter at The Delores Project are offered a safe, comfortable place to stay while seeking more permanent housing. The mission of The Delores Project is to provide a safe, comfortable overnight shelter and services to unaccompanied adult women who are homeless and have limited resources. The model of service is one of hospitality, respect and regard for the dignity of each guest.  Volunteer opportunities include:

Volunteer Work Days
Once a month, The Delores Project organizes a Saturday Volunteer Work Day for volunteers to come and do much needed work around the shelter. Volunteer Work Day projects can include a variety of activities including yard work, painting, cleaning, and other household chores.

Prepare a Meal for the Women of Delores
The evening meal is sometimes our guests' only meal that day, so it takes on an even greater significance than we might imagine. We especially need volunteers to provide meals on the weekends

Student Volunteer Program
High school or college students who satisfy a course requirement by volunteering at the shelter. Supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator, these volunteer experiences are designed to meet the needs at the shelter and be appropriate for the volunteer. College undergraduate or graduate students can design and complete a project to benefit the shelter which fits with their academic program requirements.

Other Volunteer Activities
Volunteers occasionally offer arts and crafts, musical, or other experiences for shelter guests. These are arranged and supervised through the
Volunteer Coordinator.

KidsTek

At KidsTek, we know that getting computers into classrooms or after-school centers is only the first step; supporting a technology-learning environment is at the heart of overcoming the technology gap. That type of training costs money, but it's money well spent. Building bridges pays a dividend in developing trained and motivated high-tech employees.

KidsTek works closely with Colorado youth (ages K-12) service providers in underserved communities to provide the keys to successful technology education, including:

  • Technical Resources: The development and ongoing maintenance and supervision of technology centers.
  • Curriculum: A project-based educational model for KidsTek Partners to utilize and build upon.
  • Supervision: A Technology Program Coordinator to establish, monitor & assess KidsTek Programs and train instructors.
  • Mentoring: Engaging volunteers from the technology community in a meaningful partnership
  • Assessment: Ongoing outcomes-based measurement to assess the long-term impact on kids.

KidsTek partners with Colorado companies and foundations to develop and improve these technology centers to both educate and engage kids in the diverse opportunities of the technology sector.

If you would like to share your resources or have more questions, please contact: elizabeth.leenhouts@kidstek.org.
