New Hire Faculty Orientation
Welcome to the University of Denver and the Daniels College of Business.
Faculties are the heart of a quality educational environment. At the Daniels College of Business, we take pride in the talents of our faculty members, their commitment to student success, and their focus on student learning.
A university can be a complicated place with many procedures and systems. I know your department or school will be helping you to settle into your new position. In an effort to provide you with other information and tools you need to be effective and to facilitate your teaching experience with us, I want to let you know of several opportunities available to you.
The DU homepage is another valuable source of information about the University in general, such as the bookstore, campus maps, parking services, Penrose Library and the Coors Fitness Center. The address is: http://www.du.edu.
Orientation to Daniels College - Fall 2007
You should plan to attend several important meetings in the coming weeks. Daniels’ new faculty orientation will be held on Friday, September 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The orientation begins with pictures in the Dean’s Conference Room on the 6th floor of Daniels. Also, lunch will be provided. We will cover many topics, including faculty expectations, academic programs, teaching, assessment, and scholarship, and educational technology resources.
You should plan to attend.
The Daniels College has monthly faculty or college meetings during the academic year. The meetings are generally on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 and are held in the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) Building. For Fall quarter, these meetings are scheduled for September 27, November 2 (an All College meeting from 10 – 11 a.m.) and 15. As a reminder, faculty members receive an e-mail notice one week in advance of each meeting. Winter and Spring quarter dates will be available on the faculty meeting agendas distributed during the Fall quarter meetings.
Daniels holds an annual kick off reception for faculty and staff at the beginning of the school year. It is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Cable Center.
Orientation to University of Denver - Fall 2007
The University has a series of events scheduled for new faculty. The first, Sept. 14, 9:30 – 11 a.m., is the general orientation to the University, including a briefing on employee benefits. It is important that you attend this orientation so that you can enroll in DU benefits in a timely fashion. The administrative assistant in your department or school will help you register.
DU also offers a series of workshops for new faculty sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) covering such topics as student engagement, evaluation of students, diversity, and ethical issues. These sessions are from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. on September 21, 28, October 5 and 12. Again, you should check with your administrative assistant to make sure you are registered. A large number of faculty members are joining DU this fall, and it is a wonderful chance for you to get to know faculty in other programs and colleges.
Finally, DU holds an annual luncheon for all new faculty. This year, it is on September 21 at 11:30 a.m. You should be receiving an invitation in the near future.
When you arrive on campus, I will provide you with a copy of Bill Daniels’ biography, Relentless: Bill Daniels and the Triumph of Cable TV, which I believe you will find very interesting reading. Bill Daniels is a legend in the industry, in the region, and in the University. We will also have a few other welcome gifts for you.
I encourage you to take advantage of all the various ways to learn about your new community. Again, welcome to the University of Denver and the Daniels College of Business. Best wishes for a rewarding and successful experience with us.
Sincerely,
R. Bruce Hutton
Interim Dean
