Peer
Review Team Guidelines
Teaching Scholarship Committee
Daniels College of Business
University of Denver
October 12, 2001
Objective:
To continually improve the learning environment by sharing
effective teaching methods while simultaneously reducing
obstacles.
SUGGESTED
STEPS
- Establish
your peer team (normally two members).
- Consider
pairing with faculty from another department.
- Consider
pairing with a faculty member with different experience
level.
- Meet
with your team
- Exchange
syllabi and course materials.
- Discuss
general context and content of the courses.
- Discuss
presentation methods and pedagogy.
- Pinpoint
what you do best and what needs improvement.
- Discuss
grading.
- Discuss
the specific areas of interest or concern for the reviewed
classes. These are the items or events to watch for, both
positive and negative.
- Set
dates for class visitation. For best results, schedule more
that one class each (try to attend three or four if time
permits).
- Discuss
specific teaching objectives for each class being reviewed.
- Attend
classes at the arranged times
- Evaluate
the presentation (CMC can provide guidelines). Keep in mind
that your goal is to improve learning. Do not focus on finding
criticisms of the presentation - keep a positive perspective.
- Observe
the students during the class. (Are they: Alert? Asking
questions? Taking notes? Attentive? Smiling, nodding heads,
leaning forward in chairs, etc.?)
- Provide
feedback as soon as possible after each class. Be positive.
Try to suggest ways to improve the learning environment.
Mention delivery problems if they obstruct learning.
- Videotape
the class if possible.
- After
all team members have attended classes, meet with the team to
share and discuss results
- Advise
the Teaching Scholarship Committee when the process is complete.
Provide a summary of results (without names) of ideas for improvement
that can be shared with others.
- Consider
joining another peer review team
