Note to Proposal Writers
Please read and adhere to the following material carefully
Explanation of Research Proposal
Please attach a brief (if you are requesting blind review, attach a blind brief) of the project, not exceeding five single-spaced pages, explaining your project. Give the proposed title (subject, of course, to change), and the names of the author(s) (including affiliation, if other than Daniels faculty). Indicate if the paper is currently under review at any outlet, and if you have received or have applied to receive funding from another source. If other funding has been received, indicate why additional funds are necessary. Reminder: Funding is only available for full-time Daniels faculty.
1. Statement of Purpose
This is a short statement approximately one paragraph in length, stating the purpose of the project. Essentially, this section is a very brief executive summary.
2. Literature Review and Explanation of Methodology
This section is the heart of your proposal. Your proposal will be evaluated based on the merits of this section. Thus, it is very important for you to provide a clear, discussion of your research and project design. You should assume that the proposal reviewers are intelligent, interested, but uninformed readers who will be able to understand and evaluate a well-written, non-technical discussion of your project. If the data or concepts contained in this paper have already been published or are currently under review for another journal or conference, you should clearly explain how this research is a distinctive contribution. You may suggest outside reviewers to aid the committee in its assessment of the value of your project.
As you write this section of the proposal, you also should indicate the contribution that your project will make to your field of study as part of your proposal theme.
A. Literature Review
Use your literature review to demonstrate the need for your project. Also, be sure to clearly state your research question(s).
B. Model Development
Give a clearly written, non-technical discussion of the conceptual framework you are using and why it is relevant to your research question. If you are developing a new model, you should show how it improves on existing models.
C. Research Questions/Testable Hypotheses
List each of your testable hypotheses, or research questions, and explain how they are related to your conceptual framework.
D. Data (if appropriate)
What data will you use to assess your research questions? Interviews? Observation? Questionnaire? Commercial Data Base? Etc. Briefly explain why the data are suitable for your project.
E. Data Analysis (if appropriate)
Discuss the analytical methods you will use to assess your research questions, and a non-technical discussion of the appropriateness of the methods used.
F. Budget
If you are requesting immediate funding in excess of the initial award of $500 for a single-authored proposal or $1000 for a joint-authored proposal, you must attach a budget containing expected out-of-pocket expenses (for example, to print a survey or to purchase a data base).
G. (Required) Targeted Journals
Please list 3 publication outlet(s) from your departmental targeted journal list for this project. Your department should have a list of targeted journals. Also, discuss the appropriateness of your project for the intended outlet(s).
3. Relationship to current and/or past stream of scholarship
Explain in 1/2 page or less the relationship of the proposed work to your other research activities and expertise. For joint-authored work, you should have a compelling statement for each author’s contribution to the project.
4. Timetable
Explain in 1/2 page or less your overall understanding of the project status, what you have accomplished to date, what you need to do to complete the project, and your timetable. Funds are intended to support work in progress, not work already completed. Estimated time milestones should identify key points such as literature review, model development, testing of research questions, data analysis, initial paper draft, submission of work to refereed outlet. Remember that projects must be accepted for publication in a targeted journal within 3 years of receiving the grant to receive full funding
