Case Proposal Requirements:

II:
Note to Proposal Writers
Please read and adhere the following material carefully.
Teaching Case Proposal Requirements:
Please note: Case studies should be based on field research, and contain a comprehensive analysis (instructor’s manual or teaching note) to be considered for funding. Fictitious cases will not be funded. Under extraordinary circumstances (e.g. proprietary documents, court testimonies), cases based on secondary research will be considered. Case studies are expected to be longer than five typed, single-spaced pages (excluding exhibits).
Please follow instructions given below to begin the submission process for a teaching case grant. All parts of Sections 1 and 2 must be provided (please keep your typed responses to no more than five pages total). Please remember that cases developed for use in your classroom are not eligible for funding unless they are publishable in a targeted case journal.
1. Case
A. Case Information
Give the case title (subject, of course, to change), and the names of the author(s) (including affiliation, if other than Daniels faculty). Indicate if the case is currently under review at any outlet, and if you have received or have applied to receive funding from another source. If other funding has been received, indicate why additional funds are necessary. Reminder: Funding is only available for full-time Daniels faculty.
B. Case Purpose
Provide a short statement, approximately one paragraph in length, stating the purpose of the case. Essentially, this section is a brief executive summary or case abstract.
C. Case Focus: Decision, experiential, or other
For a decision case, provide a description of the key decision(s) facing the manager(s) of the organization during the time in which the case is set. For an experiential case, describe the roles or simulations that students will be performing in a role-play or a simulation. Give consideration to the number and complexity of decisions or issues raised.
D. Case Data: Field and secondary sources
Describe the method you will use to conduct field research at the specific company that will be used for the case. If this case is based solely on secondary, publicly available data from sources not under the control of the organization being studied, please provide a compelling argument for constructing a case study from this information. (A combination of both types of data should be used for most case studies.)
E. Case Organization
Provide information on the following items: the presentation of the data in the case, the time period in which the case is set, the location of the company, and the manager(s) responsible for making the decisions. If the case is multimedia, provide a simple storyboard. Give consideration to the major sections in the case.
F. Classroom Use
Describe how the case will be useful (i.e., for what course is this case intended, how are the central problem(s) important to the course and how will the case capture the students’ interest?). Give consideration to whether there is enough substantive material to give flexibility in the use of the case.
G. Integrative Cases
Funding priority will be given for complex cases that span disciplines, above those that are narrowly focused. If the case is integrative, describe the following:
i. What functional areas does the case integrate (such as strategy, marketing, human resources, finance, accounting, production, international business, public policy)?
ii. How does the case require students to integrate such business functional areas for key decisions or analyses?
iii. Does the case have a focus, so that its application to specific functional areas is easily understood?
iv. Demonstrate that the case contains adequate information concerning each of the business functional areas represented in the case.
H. (Required) Targeted Journals
Please list 3 publication outlet(s) from your departmental targeted journal list for this project from your departmental list of targeted journals. Also, discuss the project’s appropriateness for your intended outlet(s).
I. Company Cooperation Letter
The appropriate company manager(s) must sign a Company Cooperation letter (a sample is attached). If the case is based on secondary sources, provide assurances about the feasibility of obtaining such data by copyright permission or alternative means.
J. Budget
If you are requesting immediate funding in excess of the initial award of $500 for a single-authored proposal or $1000 for a joint-authored proposal, you must attach a budget containing expected out-of-pocket expenses (for example, to distribute a survey or to obtain industry information).
2. Teaching Note
A Teaching Objectives
Describe the major teaching objectives for the case and how they relate to the specific course(s) and student levels.
B Discussion Questions and Answers and Analysis
Describe the potential discussion questions and answers that will be covered in the teaching note. Consider whether students can obtain adequate information to do the analyses requested.
C. Teaching Approaches and Suggestions
Describe how the case may be taught in the course(s). Give consideration to how the case develops students’ skills (such as judgmental, analytical, diagnostic, and evaluative [JADE] skills).
D. Theoretical Links
Describe how the case issues link to the theoretical frameworks of the discipline(s). Consider the perspectives that the case provides for such theory.
E. Key Grading Concepts
Describe the major grading concepts in the case. Consider the key points that may be recognized only by the brightest students.
F. Integrative Cases
Describe analyses that integrate business functional areas. In addition, describe how the teaching note will provide guidance for teaching an integrated approach to the case.
G. Epilogue
If desired, provide an update for the key decision(s).
H. (Required) Targeted Journals
Please list the intended publication outlet(s) for this project. Your department should have a list of targeted journals. Discuss the appropriateness of your project for the intended outlet(s).
3. Timetable
Explain in 1/2 page or less your overall understanding of the project status, what you have accomplished to date, what you need to do to complete the project, and your timetable. Funds are intended to support work in progress, not work already completed. Remember that projects must be accepted for publication in a targeted journal within 3 years of receiving the grant to receive full funding.
