Faculty News: School of Accountancy Director, Educator Award and Tenure Announced

New School of Accountancy Director

Dr. LassarThe Daniels College of Business welcomes Sharon Lassar, Ph.D. and CPA, as director of the College's School of Accountancy. Dr. Lassar comes from Florida International University (FIU) where she served as director of FIU's School of Accounting, leading it through its most recent accreditation process by the Association for Advancement of Colleges of Business as well as its first placement in BusinessWeek's ranking of top accounting programs.

"The research, teaching and service work of Dr. Lassar has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades and we are excited to have her expertise at Daniels," said Daniels Dean Christine Riordan. "What makes her unique is her substantial scholarly background, her leadership experience and talent, and a passionate commitment to increasing the participation of diverse students in accounting and other areas of business. Award

SorensonDr. James Sorenson, School of Accountancy, was named by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) as the 2010 recipient of the R. Lee Brummet Distinguished Award for Educators. Named for Dr. Lee Brummet, the IMA national president from 1979-1980, the award is given based on a candidate's distinguished teaching career in management accounting, record of scholarship, service to the IMA and promotion of management accounting as a profession.

Dr. Sorenson was presented the award at the 91st Annual Conference and Exposition June 5-9, 2010, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was also a conference speaker, presenting on applied research in the management accounting field.

Tenure

Ciocchetti TenureDr. Corey Ciocchetti, professor of Business Ethics and Legal Studies was awarded tenure. A popular professor with undergraduates, Dr. Ciocchetti teaches business law and ethics, employment law and constitutional law and this fall will lead a Business Ethics Boot Camp for fsecond-year students.

After graduating with a law degree from Duke University School of Law, a master's degree in religious studies and two bachelor's degrees in finance and economics from the University of Denver,  he practiced law at Hogan & Hartson, Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and clerked for the Honorable John Kane in U.S. District Court in Colorado. He joined Daniels in 2004. He was a 2009 finalist for the Inspire Integrity Awards, has been awarded with the Charles Hewitt Master Teacher Award, the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award by the University of Denver Alumni Association and the Scholarship of Teaching Award by the Daniels College of Business.
